In 2012, the Kanaka Bar Indian Band, near Lytton, BC, hired MBA student Zain Nayani to intern in its band office. Zain discovered a community in transformation, as it prepared with its development partners to bring a run-of-the-river hydroelectric project online.
Since that time, Zain has become the Band’s CEO, and Kanaka Bar has transformed its leadership structure and its community planning process. It is using the revenues from power generation to fund a comprehensive process to ensure a self-determining future for the entire community.
