Gist: In this powerful supplication, the author asks God to forgive his sins and to show mercy and compassion towards him. He accepts his wrongdoing and describes himself as drowning in a sea of guilt. He is ashamed of his faults and begs for God not to abandon him. He likens himself to an infant and says that God’s kindness is the milk that nourishes him. The author recognises God’s endless excellence and the gifts that God has bestowed on him, such as life itself, intellect, food, clothing, heart and spirit. The poem ends with a plea from the author that God finish what He started by guiding him through life and back into His presence.
