The Aga Khan, the head of the Muslim-Shiite religious community called the Ismailies, is known in Africa, Asia, the Middle East and Canada as a quiet and effective diplomat, a bridge builder and a benefactor.
The European media presents a prefabricated world image of the Aga Khan. The real person of the Aga Khan, however, does not fit into any of this preconceived scheme: Born in Switzerland, educated in the West – at Harvard, widely rooted in Islamic and European culture, he advocates for democracy and pluralism, human rights and human dignity.
His commitment goes far beyond his own Muslim religious community. The biggest regret of the 80-year-old Imam is his experience and observation that there is no profound knowledge of Islamic culture in the Western world. In the field of the humanities, art, and culture, the level at which Europe and Islam could dialogue are more in common with each other despite their diversity. To undertake this bridging of the vacuum in Islamic civilization be seen as his life commitment and legacy of Karim Aga Khan.
