Until the 19th century Darvaz was an independent principality, but today the region is divided between Badakhshan Province, Afghanistan, and the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Oblast (GBAO), Tajikistan. More than 30,000 people live in Darwaz District, Afghanistan, while more than 20,000 inhabit Darvoz District on the Tajik side of the border.
Now, Tajik women from Darvoz are reaching out to their sisters in Darwaz, Afghanistan, to teach them various skills.
This cross-border co-operation among women started in 2008, when 48 Afghan women journeyed to the Tajik side of the region to receive training in a host of skills that could be useful for their households and help boost their families’ incomes.
The numbers have been growing. In 2012 and 2013, 410 Afghan women learned house-keeping and business skills from their counterparts in Darvoz.
