Roshan Thomas (Posthumous Award)
Roshan graduated from Aston University with a degree in Optometry in 1978. Over the years, Roshan used this training to serve marginalised populations in the developing world.
With her ophthalmologist husband, Rahim, she volunteered in refugee camps in Pakistan. They then established a comprehensive eye clinic in one of the most vulnerable areas of Karachi and developed a nursing manual delivered through Aga Khan University.
In 2003, Roshan established an independent Early Childhood Development (ECD) centre, called the Sparks Academy, in Kabul, Afghanistan. She lived within a local Afghan community, learning about their challenges and aspirations, and used this knowledge to create a culturally relevant but international standard curriculum for her programme.
Roshan served as the Chair of the Aga Khan Education Board for British Columbia, the Chair of the United World College Selection Committee in Afghanistan and as a member of the International Baccalaureate Board of Governors.
