Bishkek – U.S. Ambassador to Tajikistan Susan Elliot and Aga Khan Development Network Resident Representative in Tajikistan Ali Akbar Pesnani signed the agreement on a new Global Development Alliance “Economic and social ties: multi-sectoral financial mechanism for development of Tajikistan” run by the Aga Khan Foundation on October 30.
This Alliance directly supports the U.S. government’s initiative New Silk Road, which will develop ties between Central and South Asia through regional energy markets, trade and transport routes, customs and border infrastructure, support of contacts between business and people, the American Ambassador said.
The Alliance will help to improve the people’s life quality, who live along the border between Tajikistan and Afghanistan. The Aga Khan Foundation and the United States Agency for International Development will provide more than $6 million each during the next five years.
The newly established Alliance will direct resources for development of main sectors allowing to improve living standards: economic growth through entrepreneurship development, financial security of households, governance and civil society, health care and education. The Alliance will also make investments in private companies to create work places, to facilitate regional trade and this way to stimulate the national economy of Tajikistan.
A part of revenues from investments will form the pool of funds to support social development along the Tajik-Afghan border in the next decades.
The local authorities appreciated this mechanism which will allow to improve living standards of population and support sustainable growth, the U.S. Embassy in Dushanbe noted.
