How Genomic Sequencing will change the way we live
Right now when you go to the grocery store, labeled on almost all the foods are Nutrition Facts. They give you the overall nutritional information for the food if you were to scan each and every molecule. This is very important to know as then you can figure out if the foods you are eating are healthy or not. Like a nutritional label, genomic sequencing is also very important! It is important because it uses information from DNA to develop new ways to treat, cure, or even prevent the thousands of diseases that affect you. See, everybody on planet Earth is different. Genetically speaking there are no two people who are exactly the same. With genomic sequencing, more formally known as the sequencing of DNA, Doctors, Biological researchers, etc. are able to “read” every part of your DNA, to treat or manage any conditions you might have (e.g. & Acrocallosal syndrome).
First of all sequencing DNA means determining the order of the four chemical building blocks that make up the DNA molecule. The sequence tells scientists the kind of genetic information that is carried in a particular DNA segment. Scientists can use sequence information to determine which stretches of DNA contain genes and which stretches carry regulatory instructions. This is a gene involved in controlling the expression of one or more other genes, turning genes on or off.

Ayaan Esmail, is a 14 year old nanotechnology and genomics enthusiast, as well as a young pharmacogeneticist. He is very passionate about these topics and he is leveraging them to solve some of the world’s biggest problems! Currently he is working on a gene sequencing start-up with a friend of his aimed at disrupting the gene sequencing industry, specifically by using nanotechnology and quantum physics! Before this he conducted an experiment in which he personalized certain blood clot medication to specific genotypes to provide personalized medication. He has also completed multiple courses in nanotechnology, personalized medicine, genomics and the biology of cancer! Adding on, he has been to many renowned events including the c2 montreal conference, and have met many renowned leaders in science, technology and the government, including former CEO of Google Canada, Sam Sebastian and Spouse of the Prime Minister, Sophie Grégoire Trudeau.
