‘World needs Aga Khan to convey the message of Islam’: Governor

Rise and serve the nation, Aga Khan tells community | Mumbai News - Times of IndiaHis Highness the Aga Khan, Imam (spiritual leader) of the Shia Ismaili Muslims today said Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) will work with Government of Maharashtra closely especially in the area of agriculture and rural support.

Appreciating the efforts of the Government for tribal development, the Aga Khan said he will consider extending support to incomplete irrigation projects in Maharashtra and creating livelihood opportunities for tribals.

The Aga Khan, currently on his Diamond Jubilee visit to India, was speaking to the Governor of Maharashtra Ch Vidyasagar Rao at Raj Bhavan, Mumbai on Thursday (1st March)

Informing the Governor that AKDN is working closely with MIT and Harvard for a programme on Architecture and Design, the Aga Khan said AKDN is also keen to work closely with the University of Mumbai. He said AKDN would assist the University in designing and developing degree or diploma programmes in heritage conservation.

The Aga Khan informed the Governor that AKDN is concentrating on developmental work in six States of India, including Maharashtra. He said the organisation is mainly working in the areas of education, healthcare, rural development and agriculture.

Congratulating the Aga Khan on the diamond jubilee of his Imamat, Governor Vidyasagar Rao said the world needs a person like His Highness the Aga Khan to convey the message of Islam. He was full of praise for the Aga Khan for the latter’s humanitarian services.

Stating that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed the intention of the government to double the income of farmers by 2022, the Governor welcomed the offer of cooperation in agriculture extended by the Aga Khan. The Governor also sought the assistance of AKDN in creating an Aga Khan Academy of Archery to offer quality training in archery to sportspersons from rural and tribal areas of Maharashtra. The Governor assured full support to AKDN in collaborating with the University of Mumbai.
