Today, I rose in the House of Commons to recognize the 81st birthday of the Aga Khan, the spiritual leader of Ismaili Muslims worldwide.
In 1972 the Aga Khan was pivotal to securing the safe arrival in Canada of thousands of Ugandan Asians, including me and my family.
It was with great pride that I – only the 3rd Ismaili Canadian ever elected to parliament – rose in the House today to wish all Ismailis celebrating, Khushali Mubarak.

Outstanding greeting by MP Arif Virani in the Canadian House of Commons this afternoon! It was short, sweet, cryptic, succinct and it sent a shiver down my spine and gave me goosebumps on the back of my neck!
