This is a fascinating collection of memories of Hasham Jamal, an Asian pioneer who left India for Kisumu, Kenya, in 1900 and went on to play a key role as a businessman and community leader. Some extracts from this lively history, lovingly compiled by his grand-daughter Shariffa Keshavjee:
As an agent of Allidina Visram, Bapaji [Hashem Jamal] was now earning a rupee a day. From this salary he sent money to his parents in India. When the postman arrived at the house in Kutiana, my great-grandmother would make him wait while she said a prayer before opening the letter which had come by boat all the way from Africa.
