26-year-old wants to make a difference

Calgary’s Rahim Moloo wants Stephen Harper’s job — and judging from his performance on Canada’s Next Great Prime Minister he just might get it.

“I know it sounds idealistic, but I’ve always really enjoyed being able to make a change,” says Moloo. “If and when the opportunity presents itself I definitely want to pursue a career in Canadian politics.”

The 26-year-old Calgarian is one of four finalists on CBC TV’s reality show, Canada’s Next Great Prime Minister, which airs Sunday. The winner will receive $50,000.

Contestants were asked to submit “one great idea” for the audition, which was then posted on YouTube. The videos received 250,000 hits online.

Moloo’s campaign looked at accessible post-secondary education and free trade. He says his experience with social media gave him a better understanding of what politicians experience during an election.

“Even with YouTube, you put your ideas out there for everyone to see and people aren’t going to agree with everything you say,” he says.

“That can be difficult because you’re bound to get people who completely disagree.”

Whether Moloo wins or loses Sunday night, his future appears bright. Currently working in international law at a firm in Washington, D.C., he has spent his life amassing an incredible list of accomplishments, including degrees from Queens University, the University of British Columbia and New York University School of Law, where he was valedictorian for all students across the various faculties at NYU.

“At this point in my life I think it’s a good idea to get some work experience,” says Moloo, who currently lives in Washington, D.C., with his wife, a fashion designer, who is due with the couple’s first child in May.
