Dr. Shezan Muhammedi has been appointed as a Researcher In-Residence Carleton Library for his background and expertise in the resettlement of Ugandan Asian refugees in Canada.
In November 2022, Carleton University will host a combined academic and community-based conference to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Ugandan Asian refugees’ resettlement in Canada. This conference, “Beyond Resettlement: Exploring the History of the Ugandan Asian Community in Exile” aims to yield insights on pathways to integration and belonging for refugee communities in Canada.
The Uganda Collection, housed at Carleton Library, is a one-of-a-kind collection that sheds light on the expulsion and subsequent resettlement of nearly 7,000 Ugandan Asian refugees in Canada. As Co-Chair of the Conference Sub-committee, Dr. Muhammedi will be able to assume a leading role in organising the conception, planning, and funding of the conference as a Researcher In-Residence.
