Ismaili Jamatkhana and Centre, Khorog, Tajikistan
Description
The design draws its inspiration and vocabulary form the vernacular architecture of the area. The most significant element of the design, is the idea of the trees in the avenue outside marching into the building and becoming structural elements which carry the roof. The building is embellished with majestic poplar trees, local and carefully selected materials, art work and construction techniques which create local employment.
Statement of the jury
The high entrance area supported by wooden pillars is evocative of the trees on the street, which are continued in an abstract way with this architecture. An interesting idea that has been implemented consistently on a highly creative level.
