Zahra and Shireen Kassam are excited to be organising the first Canadian plant-based nutrition conference in Toronto on June 1st 2019. This is on the back of the hugely successful plant-based nutrition conference organised by Shireen in London, UK , in 2018, which clearly demonstrated a demand and interest in this important field of lifestyle medicine. There are already a number of Canadian-based Physicians and healthcare professionals using plant-based nutrition to prevent and reverse chronic disease. However, given the size of Canada there has not yet been the opportunity to bring these individuals together to share expertise and devise a strategy by which lifestyle medicine (which includes nutrition therapy) can be brought into routine clinical practice.
Unhealthy diets are now the top cause of death and disability around the world, leading to more chronic disease than tobacco smoking, alcohol excess and drug abuse combined. There is an urgency to address this issue. Shifting to a plant-based diet composed of minimally processed whole plant foods is one way to combat this problem. In addition to improving human health, this dietary pattern is predicted to have huge benefits for environmental health and is part of the global strategy to prevent climate catastrophe.
This conference is collaboration between Plant-based health professionals UK, a non-profit organisation founded by Shireen in 2017 (pbhp.uk) and The Canadian Academy of Lifestyle Medicine (calmlifestylemedicine.ca).
They hope to see Canadian Health Professionals and the public at this conference. Tickets and further information on the programme can be found here
