Wildfire revisited: How Suncor Energy evacuated 10,000 people in 24 hours
At first the airlift seemed like an almost impossible feat.
Suncor logistics director Fauzia Lalani was in a meeting in Calgary on May 3, 2016 when her smartphone rang.
The person on the other end of the line said the wildfire that had caused the cancellation of her planned flight to Fort McMurray the day before had jumped the Athabasca River.
“I’m going to myself, ‘fires don’t jump rivers, what does that mean and how could it be possible?’
I called my boss and I said I think we need to stand up the RMT. Let’s be ready just in case,” says Lalani, who serves as an incident commander on Suncor’s response management team (RMT) once it is activated.
