Arif was born in Kampala, Uganda, where he lived until the early 1970s until moving to Vancouver. Upon obtaining a business degree from Simon Fraser University and earning his Chartered Accountant designation in Vancouver, Arif moved to Calgary to start the home-building company Point Grey Homes. This evolved to building and operating Monterey Place and Millrise Place, two assisted-living facilities for seniors located in Calgary. Arif later sold Point Grey Homes in 2006 and the seniors facilities in 2014. He is now a director of both Park2Go, a valet parking business, and Prestige Hospitality, which operates Hampton Inn and Homewood Suites hotels. Both of these operations are located near the Calgary International Airport. He is also a director of Edgewater Communities, which is developing The South Shore housing community at Chestermere Lake.
