World MayorThe organisers of the World Mayor Project are looking for city leaders who excel in qualities like: Honesty, leadership and vision, management abilities and integrity, social and economic awareness, ability to provide security and to protect the environment as well as the will and ability to foster good relations between communities from different cultural, racial and social backgrounds. Candidates are also expected to act at all times against any kind of discrimination.

Canada’s only candidate, Calgary’s Mayor Naheed Nenshi has been short-listed for global recognition by the City Mayors Foundation. 

The winner and runner-ups of World Mayor 2014 will be chosen based on the number of nominations in relation to the size of their cities and, more importantly, on the persuasiveness and conviction of testimonials received during this year’s World Mayor Project.

From the outset, the World Mayor Project was set up to commend mayors chosen by a large international audience rather than by acclamation by a panel of ‘experts’. 

Some 463,000 people took part in the 2012 World Mayor Project.

The City Mayors Foundation awards The World Mayor Prize every two years to a mayor who has made outstanding contributions to his or her community and has developed a vision for urban living and working that is relevant to towns and cities across the world.

The philanthropic City Mayors Foundation, an international think tank dedicated to local government, consists of professionals working together to promote strong and prosperous cities as well as good local government. Established in 2003, City Mayors encourages city leaders from across the world to develop innovative and sustainable solutions to long-standing urban problems such as housing, transport, education and employment. City Mayors also debates ways to meet the latest environmental, technological, social and security challenges, which affect the well-being of citizens.

World Mayor 2014

The City Mayors Foundation organises the World Mayor Project and awards the World Mayor Prize. The Project is designed to raise public interest in local government and encourage worldwide participation. The Prize, which has been given since 2004, honours mayors with the vision, passion and skills to make their cities incredible places to live in, work in and visit.

The World Mayor Project aims to show to a worldwide audience what outstanding mayors can achieve and raise their profiles nationally and internationally.

The aims of the international World Mayor Project, launched by the urban affairs think tank City Mayors Foundation in January 2004, are twofold.

First, City Mayors seeks to raise the profile of mayors worldwide by honouring those who have served their communities well, governed openly and honestly, as well as making significant contributions to cities nationally and internationally.

The second objective of World Mayor is to involve as many people as possible from all parts of the world in the project.

From the outset, the World Mayor Project was set up to commend mayors chosen by a large international audience rather than by acclamation by a panel of ‘experts’.

The winner receives the artistically acclaimed World Mayor trophy, while the runner-up is awarded the World Mayor Commendation.

2014 Timetable

Nominations were accepted until 21 May 2014. A longlist of candidates has gone online. A shortlist of 26 nominees has been announced on 18 June 2014. A second round of voting will take place between 18 June and the end of October 2014. The winner of the 2014 World Mayor Prize and other results of the World Mayor Project will be declared in January 2015.

The shortlist of 26 nominees for the 2014 World Mayor Prize includes four mayors from North America, four from Latin America, nine from Europe, six from Asia, one from Australia and two from Africa.

The City Mayors Foundation now invites you to support the mayor you believe should be awarded the 2014 World Mayor Prize. The world’s most outstanding mayors receive the World Mayor Prize. The City Mayors board of fellows will choose the winner and two runner-ups based on the number of email votes received and the strength and passion of supporting testimonials. The organisers believe that the persuasiveness of argument is as important as the number of votes. This ensures that a ‘good’ mayor from a smaller city can compete on equal terms with a mayor from a large metropolis.

All 26 shortlisted mayors will be asked to agree to the City Mayors’ Code of Ethics.

The City Mayors Foundation and the World Mayor Project were established in 2003 to promote, encourage and facilitate good local government. To strengthen local government further, a Code of Ethics for city leaders, who wish to perform their duties beyond all reproach, has been devised. All mayors wishing be considered for the World Mayor Prize are expected to sign up to the Code of Ethics.

World Mayor Prize sculpture shows courage and conviction

City Mayors commissioned French artist Manuel Ferrari to design a sculpture that was as unique as the city of the winning mayor. City Mayors’ senior editor, Tann vom Hove, said: “We asked Manuel Ferrari to produce a design that shows what an inspirational mayor can achieve if he builds on strong foundations.”

Before contemplating the design, Manuel Ferrari learnt as much as possible about mayors nominated for the World Mayor Award. “I wanted to know why these mayors aroused such strong feelings,” he said and added that all the mayors he studied had two characteristics in common – courage and conviction.

“I wanted to create a design that also showed courage and conviction,” Manuel Ferrari explained. “I decided on cubes as building blocks which, at first glance, are stacked precariously on top of each other. Closer inspection, however, reveals firm interlocking and construction around an invisible but strong spine.” He said that his design reflected his own experience of living and working in an urban environment. “Many of the world’s most successful cities are prospering because their different communities, often with their own cultures, are united around civic goals,” Manuel Ferrari concluded.

A slim, upward-looking figure stands for all the people who come to cities to realise their ambitions.

The World Mayor trophy has been sculpted by Berlin-based Kaspar Swankey since 2004.
