A New Voice for Alberta: Naheed Nenshi Launches Bid for Alberta [Canada] New Democratic Party [NDP] Leadership

After over a decade as mayor of Alberta’s largest city, Naheed Nenshi is taking his vision for positive change to the provincial stage. Nenshi officially entered the race to become the next leader of Alberta’s New Democratic Party on March 11, and his campaign is quickly gaining momentum across the province. To ensure Naheed’s successful leadership bid, all Albertans over 14 are encouraged to purchase a membership in the Alberta NDP via nenshi.ca, before the deadline of April 22. Having a membership is a requirement to vote in the Alberta New Democratic Party leadership election to be held in June.

Nenshi is running on a platform of pragmatic progressivism – advancing sustainable economic policies, taking meaningful action on climate change, improving public services like healthcare and education, and promoting diversity, inclusion and equality.

“I got into municipal politics because I love this province and I wanted to make life better for Albertans,” Nenshi said when launching his campaign. “Now it’s time to take that vision for positive grassroots change to the entire province.”

As a three-term mayor, Nenshi has proven he is a principled yet pragmatic leader able to work across partisan lines to get things done. Under his “positive purple” leadership, Calgary was touted as one of the world’s most progressive and livable cities. The mayor championed initiatives like pursuing renewable energy, promoting arts and culture, and cracking down on racism.

Nenshi also formed collaborative relationships with Calgary’s business community and worked tirelessly to attract job-creating investment during economic downturns. Nenshi’s unique ability to unite diverse coalitions around common-sense goals serves as a model for the NDP’s “big tent” approach going forward.

With populist politics on the rise at home and abroad, Alberta needs Nenshi’s progressive alternative now more than ever. But he can’t do it alone – the Nenshi campaign needs all hands on deck.

That’s why it’s so important to buy an NDP membership at nenshi.ca by April 22nd in order to be eligible to vote for him as the party’s next leader. The $10 membership fee is a small price to pay to be part of an exciting new movement for a better, more compassionate, equitable future.
