North America’s first-ever museum of Islamic art, the Aga Khan Museum, opened in Toronto last month to major critical acclaim. The museum highlights the diversity and history of Islamic culture through an impressive collection of textiles, ceramics, paintings and stone and metal work. Even if you’re not a museum person, the site itself is worth visiting — especially if you’re an architecture buff. Designed by Japanese architect Fumihiko Maki, the stunning granite structure makes creative use of natural light, including enormous etched windows that throw patterned shadows across the museum’s inner walls.
