Former student of Aga Khan University takes office as state’s first Muslim mayorSOUTH WINDSOR — Connecticut’s, and possibly New England’s, first Muslim mayor says he is eager to get down to business.

M. Saud Anwar, a doctor specializing in pulmonary and critical-care medicine, will serve as mayor of this town of 26,000 for the next two years.

Anwar is a native of Pakistan, where he attended medical school at Aga Khan University. In 1995, he attended Yale on a fellowship for specialty training in pulmonary medicine, critical care medicine, and occupational environmental medicine. He also holds a master’s degree in public health.
