Opinion: We can all do our part to ease African famine – Mansoor Ladha

Opinion: We can all do our part to ease African famine - Mansoor LadhaI don’t like watching the six o’clock news on TV as there are always depressing images of starving African women and children flickering across the screen. We have seen all this before, but in the latest episode, we see Somali women with dying babies stumbling into refugee camps in Kenya and Ethiopia.

Now, the whole Horn of Africa, which includes Somalia, Ethiopia, Kenya, Djibouti and Uganda, is suffering from the worst drought in 60 years. Drought and food shortages are not new to this part of Africa, and this time around, the region has experienced the driest year in decades. The Horn, with more than 40 per cent of its population of more than 160 million living in areas prone to extreme food shortages, also happens to be the poorest region on the continent.

  1. It is very difficult to understand how these types of horrible situations occur every year without fail. However, it is all about foreign cash gains masterminded by the said government officials responsible for these dockets.
They know that the international aid that will arrive will be a cash cow for them whilst lives being lost of those famine victims will be minimal but the world wide attention creates the urgency of foreign aid.
Do not be mislead by the images you watch on your news!
The way forward is for foreigners to build water dams, irrigation systems and so on to sustain basic food growth in these areas. Farming technologies are available in plenty and cheaper than handing cash aid to these governments.
That will be a blessing to the weak and hungry who are displayed instead for the cash crop for the governments.
The suffering victims are very much able and willing to sustain themselves only if given half a chance.
