Savings Groups in Remote Tajikistan

Kulyab, Tajikistan

This visit to our Aga Khan Foundation Savings Group program in Tajikistan has been an eye-opening experience on the challenges facing Tajiks who live in remote areas. Tajikistan is a country that has persistent poverty and ranks last among the Central Asian Republics on a number of development indicators. More than 60 percent of the population lives below the poverty line. Due to lack of government systems to protect the population against social and economic shocks, there are high levels of income volatility.

Our partnership with the Aga Khan Foundation will test the savings group model as a pathway to greater financial stability and access for people in Tajikistan. Launched in 2009, this program aims to reach 50,000 Tajiks living in remote areas and will introduce, adapt and expand savings groups in three mountainous regions.
