June 9, 2009 – Prime Minister of Canada – Stephen Harper – announced today in Parliament House of Commons that Canada will be seeking to extend HONORARY CITIZENSHIP OF CANADA to His Highness the Aga Khan.

Right Hon. Stephen Harper (Prime Minister, CPC):

Mr. Speaker, first, I think I speak on behalf of all members in congratulating His Highness the Aga Khan on receiving an honorary doctorate today from the University of Alberta.

The Aga Khan, with his network of agencies, is a great partner and long-time friend of Canada, and a great benefactor to humanity. He is truly a beacon of humanitarianism, of pluralism and of tolerance throughout the entire world.

I have informed the Aga Khan that our government will be seeking the consent of the House to extend honorary citizenship to His Highness. I hope that all members will see fit to confirm it.

    1. It should be highlighted that Honorary Canadian Citizenship can only be granted with a 100% yes vote of the Canadian Parliament – so all political parties would need to agree. That being said, for the motion to be put forth by the current sitting government does deserve recognition.

  7. This is the best news I have heard all year. It is fantastic to see the government of Canada recognise the contribution made by this selfless man for the benefit of humanity. His projects in poverty-stricken and war torn third world countries are a symbol of his determination to imporve the quality of life in those regions.

  8. I think it is fair to say that all Canadian governments, be they Conservative or Liberal, have shown exceptional respect and friendship towards His Highness the Aga Khan and His Highness’ community.

Many Ismailis will, and should, recall the friendship of the Aga Khan with the late Pierre Trudeau, who during his term as the 15th Prime Minister of Canada opened the doors for Ismailis who were fleeing the Ugandan crisis.

“Many of you may remember that my personal involvement with Canada dates back more than three decades when, at a time of great upheaval in Uganda, many members of the Ismaili community and others found here a new home in which they could quickly re-build their lives. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, and expressing habits of mind and spirit which have long been central to the Canadian character, this country provided a welcoming haven to those who had been victimised by history.”

The thoughts of Adrienne Clarkson, former Governor General of Canada, as expressed in a special to the Globe and Mail, exemplify that respect and also highlight the long-standing relationship.
