West Point Grey Academy Choir at World Partnership Walk

West Point Grey Academy ChoirArticle By Raheesa Jina, Grade 6

The WPGA junior school choir was invited to sing at the opening ceremonies for the 25th annual World Partnership Walk on Sunday, May 31, at Stanley Park. The choir was part of a very special platform party together with Premier Gordon Campbell, Mayor Gregor Robertson, and other dignitaries. The 21 students assembled were honoured at the opportunity to sing O Canada before thousands of walk participants and for such a worthwhile cause. Premier Campbell also gave some of our students high fives as they exited the stage.

The World Partnership Walk is Canada’s largest annual event dedicated to increasing awareness and raising funds to fight global poverty. Currently half of the world’s population, approximately 2 billion people, lives on less than $2 per day. The walk is held in nine cities across Canada. In Vancouver, this year’s walk drew an estimated 10,000 people.

Earlier, on May 12, 2009, the WPGA junior school assembly was dedicated to the issue of global poverty. A variety of students presented information about the state of poverty that exists in many parts of the world and why we need to be partners in helping to find solutions to global poverty.

Thank you to Ms. Anne Bonnycastle, Ms. Ruth Stephens, and the many supporters from the WPGA school community.
