Femida conducts a demo therapeutic writing workshop at the Dubai International Art Centre (DIAC). She uses various activities and exercises to help members express themselves.
Random thoughts. Abstract emotions. Eclipsed perspectives. How do you articulate these? You write them out on paper, says Femida Hirji, Dubai-based life coach and occupational, counselling and creative therapist. But when you’re asked to do so in longhand, you don’t quite know how.
That’s because you normally write using a keyboard. So at a therapeutic writing workshop without access to the backspace and delete keys and commands like cut and paste, you’re forced to stare at a blank sheet of paper in solitude and take your time to think and reflect.
