NEW DELHI: To enhance the livelihood of qawwals in the city and promote their talent, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) is proposing to start a weekly qawwali programme in the precinct of the Humayun’s Tomb. The move is specifically aimed at boosting the talent of qawwals in Nizamuddin basti as well as utilizing the Tomb grounds for more public events.
Humayun’s Tomb is located right across the Nizamuddin dargah, where the magic of Sufi music unfolds once a week. Historians say the weekly qawwali programme at the dargah has a limited audience. “We are looking at the idea of hosting a weekly qawwali show in the Humayun’s Tomb grounds. This would be a part of socio-economic development of residents of Nizamuddin basti. There are innumerable talented qawwals in the area who are unable to reach out to a wider audience. Such a show can give their talent a bigger platform,” said ASI director-general K N Shrivastava.
