Jhoom Jhoom: Celebration of a Lifetime

Karim Gillani (Class of 2003) has released an album last February entitled ‘Jhoom Jhoom: Celebration of a Lifetime’ to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of His Highness the Aga Khan’s accession to the Imamat. This collection of music comes from musicians of diverse backgrounds and cultures, including Romanians, Algerians, East Africans, Indians, Pakistanis, Americans and Canadians. Despite the differing backgrounds of all those who contributed, Karim maintains that because all of the songs were performed and recorded in Canada it gives Jhoom Jhoom a truly Canadian sound.

  1. I think all the CD’s that have been produced during the Golden Jubilee Year (at least in Canada) should have been accompanied by a booklet containing the lyrics (transliterated in Englsih) along with the translations. I buy world music CD’s all the time and the booklets are both informative and educational. We have a lot to learn from others.

With the exception of a few songs here and there I am afraid I have found the general standard to be mediocre and the compositions aimed at the middle aged and older members of the Jamat.

In contast the two volume set produced under the auspices of the USA Council was simply outstanding and has an appeal to all age levels, other than the fact that it also lacked a proper booklet.
I think the youth would particularly love the US production.

Karim has done a super job on this album and he is the rising, if not already a great performer. It would be even more amazing of he got to perform all around Canada, we have heard so many Ismaili singers, time to also take up new and younger perfomers. Here is Karim, who is a Ph.D candidate and a musician, he performs regularly in Edmonton and about time we Ismailis around Canada got to hear such talent.

    Golden jubilee mubarak.

  3. @lover of music: Not sure which two volume set from USA you’re referring to here but if you’re talking about Sunhera Saal by Taufiq Karmali and Abida Perveen then I absolutely agree with you. The songs are haunting and the music is melodious, though I have not listened to much of any other CDs released during GJ year.

We had a good opportunity to listen to Karim Gillani during darbar in Chicago. He is absolutely wonderful, a trained singer no doubt. I also had a quick chat with him through a friend, a very humble guy. I wish him best of luck in future.

  4. I note that the lyrics and translations for “Jhoom Jhoom” are available at Karim’s web site http://www.karimsangeet.com/jhoom.html. This is appreciated for individuals like myself who want to follow the meaning of songs.

Perhaps in future releases of other albums, the producers will take note of the importance of providing a comprehensive booklet which would include lyrics, translations and other pertinent information related to the artits.
