EDMONTON – Seven Edmonton teachers are among the finalists for Alberta Education’s Excellence in Teaching Award.
The 23 finalists were selected from 334 nominated teachers and principals. Richard Dietrich, principal at Stratford Elementary Junior High, praised Grade 1 teacher Azmina Dewji, who uses multimedia technology in the classroom.
“Her results are always above average and always extraordinary,” Dietrich said. Most of Dewji’s students enter the Grade 1 classroom with few reading skills, and all can write three-page stories by the time they leave, Dietrich said.
In addition, Dewji works on committees throughout the province, has worked oversees and has brought some of the best speakers on teaching to Edmonton. “She has a lot of different fingers in different pies throughout the education system,” Dietrich said.
