Bujagali works ahead of schedule

By Ibrahim Kasita

Construction of the 250MW Bujagali hydro-power project is two months ahead of schedule, the resident engineer has said.

John Lockwood said even with a Limited Notice To Proceed (LNTP), construction was progressing.

LNTP is a go-ahead given to a contractor to proceed with mobilisation as they wait for endorsement of financial obligations by the lenders. The Government gave the go-ahead to Salini.

In May, a LNTP and the engineering, procurement and construction agreements were signed and Italian firm Salini appointed contractor.

In return, the Government advanced $75m (sh131.2b) so that construction starts before the project lenders finalise the lending documents. This was aimed at enabling construction to start on time.

In mid-June, Salini started work, which led to the ground-breaking ceremony on August 22.
