On November 3, 2006, Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall accompanied Mawlana Hazar Imam to Hunza to see the activities of the AKDN. The Ismaili villagers had risked their lives climbing the sheer rock face of the mountain to spell out welcome messages in white stones for the visitors that read: “Welcome the Royal Couple” and “Welcome our Hazar Imam.”
Those who were present on this occasion narrate the following interesting incident:
Upon arrival, Mawlana Hazar Imam and his guests were greeted by a ceremonial guard of honour. As heir apparent to the thrones of sixteen sovereign states, the Prince of Wales had seen many such guards of honour over the course of his life. However, something about this ceremonial in Hunza was completely different and perplexed him. As he looked at the old men and women and the young boys and girls lining both sides of the red carpet, he saw tears streaming down their faces. Startled, he turned to Mawlana Hazar Imam and asked, “But why are they all crying?” Mawla looked at him and said:
“It is because I am their Imam. They love me very much…and I love them very much.”
How can worldly kings and queens ever fathom the unbreakable bond of affection between the Imam and his followers? How can they understand the meaning of “They love me very much…and I love them very much”?
Over a thousand years ago, Imam al-Qaim addressed his murids in a touching couplet of a poem he wrote in Arabic:
Oh our followers of Truth whom we love so much
And whose love within us ever increases!
On Friday, December 25, 1964, Mawlana Hazar Imam blessed the jamat of Karachi, Pakistan with his holy didar. At the time of Mawla’s departure, the jamat was weeping and didn’t want him to leave. Mawlana Hazar Imam looked at his spiritual children tenderly and said, “When I leave, each and every one of you will be in my heart, in my prayers, in my thoughts…You must remember that Imam loves you more, much more, than you can ever love him. And you must be strong in this knowledge.”
May all of us continue to be blessed by the Imam’s love and remain forever in his heart and thoughts…ameen.

Dear Ismaili and Muslim Brothers,
My life has been intertwined with Ismailis from childhood. I went to an Aga Khan Kindergarten, Aga Kenya Secondary School and worked at an Aga Khan Healthcare Institution in Nairobi for 3 years. All these shared periods have made me realise the resourcefulness, and greatness in the Ismaili’s, their way of life and their leadership. They are an open people, business minded, hardworking, and very progressive. As they have evolved over the last 50 years, so have all those affected by their progress.
Now I live in China, and I see much in similar between the Chinese and the Ismailis. Both societies are moving up the socioecomic ladder in to the upper echelons of world human evolution. People around the world need strong leadership. They need to be guided firmly towards development. Leadership needs to keep the faith of those they lead, and never betray that trust. The Ismaili’s are blessed to have such a leader as do the Chinese.
