Aga Khan Education Services Pakistan – helps adults to go literate with dignity and style

AKES,P helps Adults to go literate with dignity and style

Seek knowledge from cradle to grave. In conformity with this saying of the Holy Prophet (PBUH), mothers in different parts of upper and lower Chitral have learnt to count, read and write simple day to day matters.

Take Farida, for example: until a year ago, this 29 year old mother of four watched helplessly as her children did their homework. Now all this has changed, and every evening she sits down with her children, listening to their reading and helping with their sums. This all happened because she joined one of the 79 Adult Literacy Centres set up by AKES, P to help mothers learn to read and write.

At her Centre, she first learnt the basics of reading, writing and arithmetic. After six months, she and her colleagues were ready to tackle the school textbooks, and they started with Class II Urdu and Maths. Her Centre became so successful that at the end of the initial 18 months they were up to Class IV, and now they are requesting AKES, P to extend this period. They say they want to complete middle school education! Who knows where this may lead?

Detailed study of the impact of Adult Literacy Centers (ALCs) has shown awesome results. One can see the difference in many ways for example, children of the ALC participants tend to come to school looking clean and tidy; their fees are paid on time, and their homework is always complete thanks to the help they get from their mothers!

As for them – they can now do simple computations and read Urdu, and this has given them a new exposure with lots of confidence. Above all, they have recognized the importance of education. Indeed many of them have started to send their out-of-school children to school.

Apart from providing formal education to more than 10770 students in Chitral, ALCs are a major achievement of AKES, P in the non-formal education sector with the funding of European Commission.
