CME and CIDA Recognize Canadian Excellence in Developing Countries at the 14th Annual Canadian Awards for International Cooperation

OTTAWA, Oct. 31 /CNW Telbec/ – The 14h Annual Canadian Awards for
International Cooperation, recognizing the excellent work of Canadian
businesses and organizations in developing countries and countries in
transition, were presented by Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters today at a
special ceremony held as part of CIDA’s International Cooperation Days
Conference.
The awards were presented by Mr. Robert Greenhill, President, Canadian
International Development Agency and Hon. Perrin Beatty, President & CEO,
Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters in six different categories including a
Special Recognition Award for Long-Term Commitment to International
Cooperation.
“These awards honour excellence and corporate and personal commitment to
international development.” said Perrin Beatty, President and CEO of CME. “The
people involved from Canada and the developing countries in these projects are
working to make a significant, sustainable positive difference in individual
lives, communities and countries.”
Since the inception of the awards in 1992, over 100 firms or
organizations, from over 800 applicants, have been recognized for their
outstanding work in international cooperation. The Awards are co-funded by the
Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) and Canadian Manufacturers &
Exporters (CME).
CME and CIDA have partnered for 14 years to recognize the outstanding
contributions of Canadian business and other organizations in international
cooperation. The Canadian Awards for International Cooperation honour the
achievements of Canadian businesses and organizations supporting sustainable
economic growth, stability and social programs to reduce poverty in the
developing countries of Africa, the Middle East, Asia, Latin America, the
Caribbean as well as countries in transition in Central and Eastern Europe.

Award Categories and recipients for 2006:

– Award for Improvement of Social Infrastructure, partner: CHF – Canadian
Society for International Health (Ottawa, Ontario), for the “Public Health
Strengthening in Guyana” Project.

– Award for Excellence in Capacity Building of Small and Medium-Sized
Enterprises, partners: Cowater International and CRC Sogema – Mennonite
Economic Development Associates (Waterloo, Ontario), for the Hati Punguzo:
Distributing Insecticide Treated Nets through the Private Sector” Project in
Tanzania.

– Award for Excellence in Capacity Building of Small and Medium-Sized
Enterprises, partners: Cowater International and CRC Sogema – SOCODEVI
(Montreal, Quebec), for the Project to Support Production and Marketing of
Nontraditional Products in the Central and Northern Parts of Chuquisaca in
Bolivia.

– Award for Excellence in Corporate Social and Ethical Responsibility,
partner: Nexen Inc. – Barrick Gold Corporation (Toronto, Ontario), for the
Integrated Agricultural and Livestock Project at Communities in Andres Avelino
Caceres of Cuncashca Community in Peru.

– The Award for Gender Equality Achievement, partner: Tecsult Ltd. –
Trade Facilitation Office of Canada (Ottawa, Ontario), for the ACCESS! for
African Businesswomen in International Trade Program.

– Huguette Labelle Award for Engaging Youth in International Cooperation,
partners: Aga Khan Foundation and the Association of Canadian Community
Colleges – Free the Children (Toronto, Ontario) for the “Youth in Action”
Program.

– Special Recognition Award for Long-term Commitment to International
Cooperation, partner: Développement international Desjardins – Stratexport
International Inc. (Montreal, Quebec).

– Special Recognition Award for Long-term Commitment to International
Cooperation, partner: Développement international Desjardins – University of
Calgary, International Centre (Calgary, Alberta).
