At a lecture at Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda, on 19 August 2022, Dr Mahmood Mamdani discussed the Uganda Asian expulsion. His lecture ‘What have we learnt over half a century’ takes a critical look at the forced expulsion of Uganda Asians 50 years ago, its historical causes, far- reaching effects, and Dr. Mamdani’s challenging prescription for the future of Uganda and other multi-ethnic societies.
Dr Mamdani is the Herbert Lehman Professor of Government. He was also professor and executive director of Makerere Institute of Social Research (2010-2022) in Kampala, where he established an inter-disciplinary doctoral program in Social Studies.
