Dr. Khalil Andani’s latest article “Metaphysics of Muhammad: The Nur Muhammad from Imam Ja‘far al-Sadiq (d. 148/765) to Nasir al-Din al-Tusi (d. 672/1274)” has been published in The Brill Journal of Sufi Studies. The article talks about about the Quranic, Shi’i, Ismaili & Sufi visions of Prophet Muhammad & his pre-existent Light and tracks the development of this doctrine through Islamic intellectual history.
Standing at over 75 pages, Dr. Andani’s analysis includes the early Shi’i hadith attributed to Imams al-Baqir and Ja’far al-Sadiq; Sahl al-Tustari; the Ikhwan al-Safa; the Ismaili Da’is Sijistani and Kirmani; the Sufis Ghazali and ‘Ayn al-Qudat; the Ismaili scholar ‘Abd al-Karim al-Shahrastani; the Andalusi Sunni mystic Ibn ‘Arabi and his interpreters; and the Ismaili philosopher Nasir al-Din Tusi. The article concludes with contemporary observations about how the doctrine of the Nur Muhammad or Nur al-Imama continues to inform spiritual practice within Sufi and Ismaili Tariqas of Islam.
