For centuries, Muslims around the world have pondered over the nature of Mi‘raj; was it a physical journey or a spiritual vision? Was the most beloved man of Allah awake or it was in his dream that he experienced the greatest sight of all? Scholarly Muslim traditions are filled with a vast array of the interplay between metaphysical and rational reception of the most beautiful journey, the Mi‘raj. The hadith tradition and Qur’anic commentaries are also filled with detailed narratives of what transpired on that night, but the Almighty, in the Qur’an, speaks with restraint, alluding briefly to a journey from the sacred to the farthest mosque (Q, 17:1). Perhaps the Most Merciful and All-knowing kept it abstract just to ensure a continuous source of inspiration for all mankind till eternity.
