Kamrudin A. Rashid: Jamatkhanas in Mozambique

Jamatkhanas in Mozambique

Picture of Nampula Jamatkhana in Mozambique.

The above Jamatkhana is one of the few Jamatkhanas in Mozambique. Others being in Maputo, Pemba, Beira, Tete and Quelimane.

Below is the picture of the historical Jamatkhana in Maputo (previously known as Lorenco Marques scanned from a 1968 post card). During the visit to Maputo in November 2007 for Holy Deedar of Mawlana Hazar Iman during the Golden Jubilee Celebrations, we had the opportunity to see this old but elegant and beautiful Jamatkhana built in 1941 during the Imamat of Imam Sultan Muhammad Shah. As can be seen from the picture, it is carved with the name “Edificio de Sua Altez Aga Khan”.

  1. Absolute beauty. For me it’s going down memory lane… It reminds me of the Jamat Khana in Mombasa, Kenya.
