The news of a bomb threat against Muslim students at Concordia University on Wednesday is saddening and alarming. As educators, students and researchers of religious literacy, we feel this incident demonstrates the need for religious literacy.
Religious literacy is unfamiliar to many. It entails the ability to discern the diversity within and among religious groups, an awareness of the basic tenets of the major world religions, and an understanding of their influence throughout history.
While it is impossible to be fully literate, every bit of knowledge is important in light of the contentious climate we live in.
