While Canadians across the country spent two weeks keeping up with and cheering on our athletes in Rio, Augstana Vikings basketball player Fareen Lalani was already the proud owner of a gold medal.
The second year guard played as part of the Canadian women’s team that took part in the Jubilee Games in Dubai July 22 to 29.
The Games are held every four years with the intention of bringing together Ismaili Muslims from around the world, with 17 countries participating in the most recent event.
Athletes compete in events ranging from the traditional sports of basketball, swimming and track and field to chess and cricket.
In order to be selected to go, most athletes took part in their respective country’s Ismaili Games. For Canada, those were held in Calgary July 31 to Aug. 3, 2015.
Lalani said she was was fortunate enough to bypass the tournament and made the 12 person team by already being a collegiate athlete.
