Toronto based Ismaili journalist looking for the Partnership/Support in setting up Community Journalism Project in Dar es Salaam, TanzaniaBy KHALID MAGRAM

Tanzania Community Journalism Project is a result of my two passions: community journalism and social justice.

I am looking for like-minded organizations or individuals from Ismaili community, who are willing to join hands with their time and knowledge in setting up unique project to empower people, strengthen democracy and promote the voice of local communities in Dar es salaam, Tanzania. With the potential of expanding to other parts of East Africa.

The Tanzania Community Journalism Project is hoping to give a unique platform to national and international social agencies for spreading information of their work, events and campaigns as news stories that will be read by people they want to reach all over the region.

In addition, the project will act as forum for open discussions on municipal government decisions, services and their civil rights and responsibilities for strengthening democracy.

During my recent visit to Tanzania, I was awe-stricken by how little information is available to the public. Especially information regarding many resources available in local communities (Example: info on support for maternal health, disability, women issues and on education just to name few…) provided by NGO’s and other social agencies, that when drawn upon could make a huge difference in people’s lives.

Dar es Salaam is a multicultural city, home to African Tanzanians, Arabic and South Asian communities, British and German expatriates, Catholics, Lutherans and both Sunni and Shia Muslims including large population of Ismailis.

Despite the diversity in people – civil society and the general citizenry have been on the periphery on the district development process in Tanzania for a very long time. Many Tanzanians still do not know that they have the right to information. When you ask members from one of these communities when last did they have read a news story about their community in Tanzanian newspaper? You get a long pause and then it hits them that they have never read a news story about their community in Tanzania newspapers.

I wish to tackle this problem by introducing a new player in Tanzanian Journalism scene.

Community Journalism.

This concept of journalism is new to Tanzania. This unique fusion of community journalism and social justice is what lacking and needed in Tanzanian journalism scene today.
