Event – March 26 | Aga Khan University, London, UK | Cordoba, the Umayyad Capital of al-Andalus: Latest Archaeological Researches

Institute for the Study of Muslim CivilisationsFor years, the significance in the history of al-Andalus of the Great Mosque of Cordoba (Madīnat Qurṭuba) has overshadowed any other archaeological discovery in the city. In addition, the study of the palatine town of Madīnat al-Zahrā, founded in 936 just a few miles away from the Andalusian capital, has also eclipsed the past of the ancient Qurṭuba. However, due to the urban growth since the last two decades, new excavations in the city have provided with a huge amount of archaeological data, especially from the Umayyad Caliphate (929-1031). As a result, knowledge of the Islamic Cordoba has considerably increased in a very short space of time.

Synopsis
The most relevant findings came from the western area, where thousands of square metres of medieval suburbs have been excavated and found in a good state of conservation. During the 10th century, according to its status as capital of the Caliphate of Cordoba and the consequent increase in population, new districts were built in this part of the city, consisting of domestic habitats, mosques, artisanal installations, cemeteries and agricultural areas. The principal features of each of these spaces will be described during the lecture.
