“The trophy is of particular importance to the history of horseracing in this country illustrating as it does in a single object both the pivotal role of the Aga Khan’s family in their patronage of the sport and Sir Winston Churchill’s private passion for the Turf.
We are intending to feature the cup very prominently in our new Sporting Glory gallery in the Palace House.”
– Chris Garibaldi, Director of the National Horseracing Museum
The Aly Khan Memorial Cup, which was raced for just once, has been donated to the museum to be displayed in the new centre in Charles II’s racing stables when it opens to the public in 2016.
The cup was won by Churchill’s horse High Hat, who was sired by Hyperion.
Aly Khan was a racehorse owner and jockey. His most famous horse was Petite Etoile, who came second place to High Hat in the race for the cup in 1961.
