About Mohammed Arkoun Foundation for Peace Between Cultures Website

The website has the main objective, to host a variety of audio and video recordings related to Professor Arkoun, such as lectures, interviews, radio and TV programmes, courses at the Sorbonne, and others.

The task of collecting and listening involved months of preparatory work, which shows how precious this heritage is.

I have decided to make the material available to the public at large for free, material that only a small number of individuals had benefited from so far. This was done in order to keep alive this monumental oeuvre, to which he devoted his whole life. It constitutes a legacy to humanity that must be equally known and preserved for future generations.

This website will also have the function of informing the public about the foundation’s activities, both in Morocco and elsewhere.

Similarly, it will allow users who access all these written and oral documents by Mohammmed Arkoun to unmask those who claim for themselves the attribution of the ideas and concepts that he developed for decades!

Once in operation, it will function in partnership with the website pages devoted by the Institute of Ismaili Studies in London, which houses his archives. That institution, where he taught for about twenty years and where he contributed to the formation of numerous promotions of students, has many people who are acquainted with his thought.

His Highness Prince Karim Aga Khan & Professor Mohammed Arkoun; Institute of Ismaili Studies & Foundation for Peace Between CulturesAt the head of that institute, His Highness Prince Karim Aga Khan has had the immense generosity to finance these archives with the best means, which will enrich the foundation considerably.

To further honour his memory, Prince Karim Aga Khan has created the GBP 100,000 “Mohammed Arkoun Doctoral Scholarship” for a period of four years of study. The first award was recently given, after a selection process with candidates from all over the world, to an Iranian researcher.

In addition, the foundation has established the Mohammed Arkoun Prize. It will be awarded every two years to the best work produced on his oeuvre. The amount of the prize will be fixed by Mr. Candido Mendes, President of the Academy of Latinity and donor of the prize.

Reflecting on Professor Arkoun’s account we are equally inspired to retrospect on the vision of Islamic Humanism that our Imams have inspired – in this case, the vision of Imam Jafar Sadiq.

I can tell you that you represent in Muslim world, in Islamic Ummah a very exceptional community, exceptional community for three reasons:

  1. The first reason is that you have since 1957, His Highness as a spiritual guide, as an intellectual guide …
  2. The second reason why in my view you are privileged among Muslim communities is that you are dispersed all over the world …
  3. The third reason why you should feel yourself privileged is that you have moved to some countries like Canada and the United States …
