Dr. Amir Kassam addresses International Global Water Initiative ConferenceDr. Amir Kassam is currently Visiting Professor at the University of Reading in the UK, which he combines with other activities such as being on the Board of ACISAI for Asia, the AIT Institute in Thailand, the Steering Committee of the Platform for Agrobiodiversity Research at Bioversity International, London. He is also Associate Editor of the Journal of Irrigation Science, Springer. He has collaborated and participated with international organizations involved in agriculture and development, such as CGIAR, WARDA, and the Aga Khan Foundation, some of them particularly relevant for Conservation Agriculture, like CoP-CA, or ECAF. In 2005, he was awarded an OBE (Order of the British Empire) for services to tropical agriculture and to rural development.

Keynote address: Global Context of the link between food security and rainfed agriculture / conservation agriculture.

Dr. Amir Kassam earned a degree with honors, and a doctorate in Agriculture. He has specialized in Agro-Ecology at the University of Reading, UK, and Masters in Irrigation from the University of California at Davis.

Doctor Kassam combines his multiple activities with his teaching as Visiting Professor at the University of Reading, UK. He is an advisor for the FAO, the Aga Khan Foundation (AKF), and the European Conservation Agriculture Federation. He is also a Moderator of the Global Platform for Conservation Agriculture Community of Practice, and Convener of the Land Husbandry Group of the Tropical Agriculture Association (TAA-UK).

Presently, Dr. Amir Kassam is a board member of the Asian Center of Innovation for Sustainable Agriculture Intensification (ACISAI), and of the Asia Institute of Technology (AIT) in Thailand. He is on the Steering Committee of the Platform for Agrobiodiversity Research at Bioversity International, Rome. He is also Fellow of the Institute of Biology, London; and Associate Editor of the Journal of Irrigation Science, Springer

Dr. Amir Kassam is former Interim Executive Secretary and Senior Agricultural Research Officer on the Secretariat of the CGIAR, FAO, in Rome. He was Deputy Director General for Programs at WARDA (Africa Rice Center) in the Ivory Coast, Chairman of the Aga Khan Foundation in the United Kingdom, as well as the President of the TAA in the United Kingdom.

His research and development work covers agronomy, agro-ecology, sustainable production intensification, sustainable land stewardship and natural resources, land resource evaluation for development planning, and areas linked to rural development, and training and education for extension workers.

As a result of his professional attainment, in 2005, he was awarded the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for services in tropical agriculture and rural development.
