Upon leaving [the Aga Khan Museum], there’s a noticeable sign pointing to the nearby Ismaili Community Centre, which offers tours with advanced bookings. It is only fitting that Toronto, one of the most multicultural cities in the world, is home to the first museum of Islamic Culture in North America, the Aga Khan Museum. The museum, which officially opened to the public on Sep. 18., is a place where a rich history of Islam and its art come to life to educate everyone who walks through its doors.
The layout of the museum and its exhibits is very open. This museum is a real treat for those who love architecture. The chief architect of the museum was Fumihiko Maki who has used light as an inspiration in his design. Next to the help and ticket desk is a huge skylight, which can also be used as an outdoor patio. The windows surrounding it are filled with mashrabiya patterns (intricate latticework) which create shadow patterns around the atrium when the sun shines through. While there isn’t necessarily a heavy natural light prominence within the exhibit halls, it is definitely present in the main atrium area.

It is a real pleasure to be taken to some of the most intimate parts of the building such as the prayer hall and learn about the community. It is worth the extra half hour for those who are sincerely curious to learn even more about the Shi’a Ismaili community behind the museum.
