The Emerging Power of Giving in Africa – By David Barnard, Vice-President: Africa at TechSoup Global, for Huffington Post
In many parts of Africa, philanthropic giving is still an underdeveloped practice. Reasons for this include the absence of a vibrant nonprofit sector, active corporate citizens, and institutional mechanisms aimed at encouraging giving practices. Political instability and the poor state of the economy were also contributing factors in the past.
But Africa is changing for the better — socially, politically, and economically.
[…] Spearheaded by the Aga Khan Foundation and other active in Kenya, the new Yetu initiative — meaning “Our” in Kiswahili — will catalyze community philanthropy in support of civil society organizations.

About Aga Khan Foundation East Africa’s “Yetu (Our) Initiative”
AKF EA’s 4-year project with USAID is entitled the Yetu Initiative. Yetu means “Our” in Kiswahili. The Initiative will help Kenyans assert, “These are our concerns, and these are our solutions.” Yetu will strengthen CSOs in community philanthropy, which occurs when citizens mobilize their own resources to address their community’s needs (whether these are very local communities, or even the global community of Kenyans).
Yetu will work with Kenyan CSOs to engage and catalyze citizen support for their missions.
This initiative will be based on collaborative efforts involving the private sector, government and civil society.
