The Karim Cookie Fund: A Canuck Place child's legacyThe story of a young child who passed away at the age of three years

At Canuck Place Children’s Hospice, the length of time a person has to live has little bearing on the legacy they leave behind.  Karim Webber was just three-and-a-half years old when he passed away at Canuck Place, but his presence will be felt here for many years to come. In honour of their son’s memory, Eric Webber and Farah Valimohamed set up the Karim Cookie Fund, an endowment fund that has raised over $31,000 to date for Canuck Place.

In 2009, Karim was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a type of cancer that typically affects children younger than five. After successive attempts to treat his disease had failed, Karim was referred to Canuck Place Children’s Hospice.

“As his pain became increasingly difficult to manage at home, the physicians at Canuck Place arranged for Karim to be admitted to the hospice,” said Eric and Farah. “What started as a one or two day visit to manage pain, turned into more than eight weeks at Canuck Place. Canuck Place Children’s Hospice became our second home, and along with our older son Rahim, we stayed there with Karim.

  1. Dear Dr Farah and Dr Eric,
I am amongst many who were very saddened to hear about Karim and offer my heartfelt condolences. May his soul rest in peace.

Thank you for all your generous and committed leadership as medical doctors in supporting pediatric surgery projects that help children around the world.
