Rumi Verjee made British peer

Rumi Verjee made British peerLONDON: Rumi Verjee is among 30 new peers announced by British Prime Minister David Camero.

Rumi Verjee, a self-made entrepreneur, originally from East Africa, becomes Lord Verjee.

The party has also ennobled Rumi Verjee, the owner of Thomas Goode, a shop in London’s Mayfair district. The former barrister, who launched the first UK franchise of Domino’s Pizza in the 1980s, has given £770,000 to the Lib Dems.

Mr Verjee donated through a company called Brompton Capital, which was at one time owned by Integro Nominees (Jersey), which was previously based in the Channel Islands but not any more.

“Rumi Verjee is fully tax-resident in the UK and the companies he owns pay all their taxes in the UK,” said a spokeswoman.

Mr Verjee was cleared by the Electoral Commission after Michael Dugher, a Labour MP, asked the elections body to investigate his donations.

The businessman is a philanthropist who set up the Lib Dems’ “Leadership Programme” to find more candidates from under-represented groups.
