Senior Kanji finishes Big Red’s victory over Union and cherishes moment with ‘Lynah Faithful’
Hey, baseball fans — what do Lenn Sakata, Ron Washington, Juan Bell and Manny Alexander have in common?
I’ll give you a couple of hints: They all played for the Baltimore Orioles, and they also share a somewhat dubious distinction with Cornell senior men’s hockey goalie Omar Kanji.
First-year senior goalie Chris Hogan mans the far left end of the Cornell bench and next to him is Kanji, the son of Sikander and Shaina Kanji of Thornhill, Ontario, about 11 miles north of Toronto. Those who attend Cornell games know Kanji is the guy that opens and closes the door to the bench, patting a teammate on the head and offering encouragement after a shift.
But fans probably do not know that Kanji, an outstanding student, is also the guy who stays late after practice if a Miller or a Nick D’Agostino wants to work on a particular aspect of his offense. He is the guy who shows up every day, works hard and roots his teammates on in practice and in games
