On August 17th, 2011, 26 brave participants began their journey to Cusco, Peru, to embark on a five day trek to Machu Picchu via the Inca trail. Machu Picchu, “the lost City of the Incas”, was believed to have been built in the mid-15th century. Of these 26 participants, 14 participants had undertaken a further extension of the challenge – to trek an additional six days around Mt. Ausangate, reaching altitudes as high as 5200m (17,160 ft). Each person had their own reasons for participating, but collectively, we wanted to make a difference in the lives of those less fortunate than us, through Save the Children’s programs in Latin America. Our group consisted of 12 males and 14 females with ages ranging from 20 years to 60 years.
The following Ismailis participated in this trek:

Indeed in our community we have heroes. I applaud the efforts of the Ismaili team which
led the expedition of Machu Pichu. Such efforts may accidentally even arouse discussions
of the possibility of further excavation and discovery of secrets of ancient past and as a result
one day to develop the surrounding areas with a view to improving the quality of life there.
BRAVO to all the participants.
