Interview with Bahadur Madhani

“You have not lived a perfect day unless you have done something for someone who will not be able to repay” read the laminated signs in the bedrooms of Jameel and Farahnaaz, son and daughter of Mrs Polly and Mr Bahadur Madhani, who has been awarded the Order of Canada,

Doing something for someone who will not be able to repay: this motto has guided Bahadur Madhani since he was 6 years old. He is proud to pass it on to his teenage children.

Bahadur Madhani received the Order of Canada for his dedication “to helping those in need”, as a citation by Governor-General Adrienne Clarkson says about him, “He uses his business expertise to provide leadership and practical wisdom to the causes he embraces.”

Madhani till recently was Chairman of the United Way of Greater Toronto for an unprecedented one and a half term of 3 years. During his time, United Way raised over $170 million for the many agencies it funds. He was the first South Asian and second non-mainstream person to become Chairman in the 45-year history of the United Way.
